Waste Analysis and Characterization Study

"Segregation: If trash can,so can you"

The medical students conducted a 3-day Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) with the purpose of being able to identify the amount and types of solid waste generated by the different households in Barangay Camul to be able to better address the problem of improper solid waste disposal in the community.

Prior to conducting the survey, the medical students identified households that fit the criteria for the household which are: the household must have 4-6 members, no home-based business and no events like birthdays, fiesta or weddings on the 3 collection days. 30 households were chosen to be the sample of the study of which 3 were of high income, 12 were of middle income and 15 were of low income. The study period must include one market day, one ordinary day and one weekend so as to feature varied waste generation patterns of the same household which will provide for a better understanding of the solid waste generated in the different households. The study was scheduled from January 12 to January 14 to cover said days.

On the day before the start of the study, the medical students led by team leader PJ Purple Liz Montalban went to the 30 households selected for the study to distribute garbage bags, as well as to orient the households on what to do for the study.

The waste collector in charge, Abuhayier Ibni led the collection of the sample waste from 8-10am every day.

On January 15, the WACS was done, with Ailexxa Delgado and Czerahlee Jaine Santos, the weigher and recorder respectively, working in tandem in weighing the waste of each household. After weighing the different waste, the waste of each household were inspected for any mistakes in segregation before the non-biodegradable waste was sorted into the different types before being weighed separately.

Proper disposal of the waste collected was done with the biodegradable waste being buried at a lot provided by the barangay officials while the non-biodegradable waste were collected then handled and disposed under the care of a barangay kagawad.

The results of the WACS were inputted and processed by Jhaynur-Rezza Balahim before it was analyzed by team leader PJ Purple Liz Montalban
