“People tend to abuse the environment because they regard it as a commodity belonging to them, but when they see it as a community where they belong, they might just learn to love and respect it.” Health and environment directly affect each other, our health is determined by the kind of surrounding we live in. During our last community immersion in Barangay Camul, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte, residents identified Solid Waste Management as part of the problem in their area over the general assembly. In accordance to Republic Act no. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 the project leaders, Ailexxa Delgado and PJ Montalban proposed several solutions to address this matter with the help of the other team members and barangay council. The municipality also adopted this Act and made an ordinance known as Tampilisan Municipal Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2018 which is now on its third hearing. Once the act will be passed, its implementation will follow and the habitants of Camul must be aware of the changes to avoid having penalties. Thus, a program named BBB or Bye Bye Basura was established. The team started to educate the people on proper segregation and disposal of waste not only to adult population but also to the students of Camul Elementary School. A campaign of having quad trash bin per household and other institutions with proper label for Biodegradable, Recyclable, Residual and Special Waste was introduced. The project leaders also coordinated with the SK Chairman for future plans like clean up drive once a Residual Containment Area will be ready.
